BISHKEK - A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale has jolted southern Kyrgyzstan on the border with Uzbekistan, the US Geological Survey said Tuesday.

No casualties or serious damages were immediately available. The earthquake occurred at about 1:35 am local time on Wednesday 400 kilometers from Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake took place 9.2 km underground, around 42 km southwest of Ferghana, a city in the east of Uzbekistan.

The earthquake reportedly lasted up to 15 seconds, and it was not clear if the epicenter of the earthquake was in a populated area.
