NEW DELHI - At least nine people were killed and five others injured in a road mishap in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh late Thursday night, said police.

The mishap happened when a truck in which the victims were travelling was hit by another truck in Hasayan area, While three people were killed on the spot, six others succumbed to their injuries on the way to hospital.

The others injured have been admitted to a local hospital.

Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world with at least 110,000 people killed on the road each year.
