Heavy rain leaves 9 dead in S Korea

SEOU - Torrential rain that has lashed South Korea over the past few days has left nine people dead and one missing, the National Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday.

The agency said in a statement that floods and landslides triggered by heavy downpour have caused the deaths since last Friday.

Seoul has suffered accumulated rainfall of 99 millimeters since last Friday, while South Gyeongsang and Jeolla provinces in the south and Chungcheong in the central part of the country have been struck by as much as 500 mm of rain, according to the agency.

It also said the heavy rainfall has damaged or flooded many houses and farmland and left 640 people homeless. Among them, 470 have returned home.
