An official with the Israeli government told The Associated Press that a deputy prime minister will attend in Netanyahu's place. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Another person briefed on the change in Netanyahu's plans said that the Israeli government is concerned that some countries, particularly Egypt and Turkey, would seek to turn the summit into an anti-Israel event.

Obama organized the gathering of more than 40 countries to discuss how to prevent nuclear material from falling into the wrong hands.
