TEHRAN - Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Wednesday that imposing sanctions on Iran under the pressure of the United States has already been proved a failure, local satellite Press TV reported.

"Imposing sanctions on Iran would be like taking the wrong path that (former US President George W.) Bush already tried out and proved a failure," Press TV quoted Mottaki as saying.

"Five years ago they issued these resolutions against us. We, however, have progressed in the economic arena," he stressed.

Britain, France, the United States and other western countries have been pushing for a fourth round of UN sanctions to restrict Iran's nuclear efforts, which they say are aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

Iran has denied the western accusation and stressed its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes.
