JAKARTA - The strong quake with a magnitude of 7.2 on Wednesday injured at least six people in Aceh province, a military officer said.

A military officer at military command in Simeulue island who has just returned from the General Hospital at the island for checking the impact of the quake reported that the victims were hit by some parts of the building which fell during the quake.

"One of our officers who has just returned from the General Hospital said that the two of the six wounded persons suffered from serious injuries," an officer in charge at the military command told Xinhua over phone.

The hospital did not collapse and still operate, the officer said.

The quake struck at 5:15 a.m. Jakarta time Wednesday (2215 GMT Tuesday) with the epicenter at 75 km southeast Sinabang of the province and at a depth of 34 km.

The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake at a magnitude of 7.8.
