Strong earthquake jolts Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK - A strong earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Kyrgyzstan's capital area, the Institute of Seismology of Kyrgyzstan's National Academy of Sciences said on Tuesday.

The quake hit the country at 0755 local time (1755 GMT) Tuesday. Its epicenter was located in the village of Cholpon, 22 km west of Kochkorka in the province of Naryn, a source from the institute was quoted as saying by the Kyrgyz News Agency.

Besides, the capital of Bishkek and the city of Tokmak were also hit by 3.0-magnitude and 4.0-magnitude earthquakes, respectively.

No casualties have been reported.

A previous report by the US Geological Survey said that a 5.0-magnitude earthquake had jolted Kyrgyzstan's capital area.
