Clinton named UN int'l coordinator for Haiti

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday appointed former US President Bill Clinton the United Nations international coordinator for relief efforts in Haiti, a UN spokesman said.

Martin Nesirky, the spokesman for the secretary-general, told a press briefing that Ban met with Clinton, who is current UN special envoy for Haiti, on his role in the quake-devastated Haiti.

Ban will formally appoint Clinton to "represent the UN at the strategic level" and coordinate aid, financial assistance and reconstruction, a UN official told reporters Tuesday on condition of anonymity.

The January 12 earthquake, which devastated Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, killed up to 300,000 people and brought unimaginable suffering to the island nation already experiencing decades of conflict and poverty.
