Gaza's Iranian-backed Hamas rulers have accused Israel of slaying Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel on January 20. Israel's government has refused comment on the assassination of a man it had sought for decades.

Dubai authorities have said the crime likely was committed by a "professional criminal gang" with European passports.

The Israeli officials said al-Mabhouh was key to moving arms made in Iran or funded by the Iranian government to Gaza. The official did not confirm Israeli involvement in his killing.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing confidential information.
