The museums, members of the Committee for the Salvation of Spanish Art Treasures, will be awarded the Order of Arts and Letters of Spain by the Spanish prime minister at a ceremony on Monday, according to the Presidency's website.

The actions of the committee members during the civil war from 1936 to 1939 prevented hundreds of works of art in Spanish galleries at that time from being destroyed.

Apart from the ceremony, an exhibition and a congress will be held. The event was the first joint and coordinated involvement of the museums in Europe to save works of art as part of the common heritage of mankind, the website said.
