BERLIN: Police say two streetcars have crashed head-on in southwestern Germany, injuring 27 people, six of them seriously.

Police spokesman Ralf Minet says both streetcar drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be cut out by firefighters after the accident Thursday in Karlsruhe. He says they both are being treated for possibly life-threatening injuries and four passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Twenty-one other passengers were treated at the scene for more minor injuries.

The two streetcars crashed on tracks in the city center. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
