Elbegdorj made the comments in a plenary meeting of parliamentary session.

"Although our country retains the punishment today, the country has to abolish it," he said, while suggesting commuting the death penalty to a 30-year severe jail sentence.

Although the power to commute any death sentences rests with the president, changing the law would require approval from the parliament which is dominated by the opposition party.
