The United States is committed to building better communication channels and to identifying the areas where the two countries can work together, Washington's chief business officer in Bolivia, John Creamer, told the press.

US-Bolivia ties were suspended in September 2008 when Morales expelled US ambassador to Bolivia Philip Goldberg. Washington retaliated by expelling Bolivia's ambassador.

Relations began to improve in 2009, but with slow progress.
