GEORGETOWN, Guyana: A top Guyana official says the South American country will buy two new river ferries from the Chinese government for $17 million.
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn says that government officials from the two countries signed the purchase deal earlier in the week.
Benn told reporters Saturday that the new ferries will arrive in 2011 and will vastly improve the government's passenger and cargo service along waterways such as the Essequibo River.
State-owned ferries hauling cargo and passengers on the country's rivers break down frequently. Travelers often rely instead on private speedboats.
