Household spending on the rise in Japan, monthly incomes drop

TOKYO:The average spending of Japanese households rose in October from a year earlier, said the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications on Friday.

In October, mean monthly household spending in Japan, from a year earlier, increased a price-adjusted 1.6 percent, according to the ministry. The average expenditure rose to 287,789 yen.

In a preliminary report the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said that the average monthly income for households with at least one salaried member dropped 1.8 percent. The average monthly income for households in Japan fell to 459,704 yen, the government said.  

Household spending figures are a key indicator of private consumption, which accounts for about 60 percent of Japanese gross domestic product.

Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications oversee improvements to the Japanese administrative organization and civil servant system. In addition, the office manages local governments, elections, telecommunication and the regular collection and collation of key governmental statistics concerning the national basic system.
