Japan's salaried household spending down 2.9 percent in February

Spending by Japanese salary-earning households in February fell 2.9 percent from a year earlier after rising 0.2 percent in January, the government said Friday.

Average monthly spending by wage-earning households amounted to 299,535 yen (2,256 dollars), said the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, and Posts and Telecommunications.

Household spending is a key indicator of personal consumption which accounts for some 60 percent of the country's gross domestic product.

Spending by salary-earning households comprises about 60 percent of Japan's total household spending.
