You can't win an Olympic medal if you don't start young.

That's why China's been pouring money into junior golf since the announcement of the sport's inclusion in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The latest effort is the establishment of the Volvo China Junior Championship, from Oct 2 to 7 during the National Day, at the Stone Bay Golf Club in Weihai, Shandong province.

"It gives Chinese boys and girls the precious chance to play against internationals their own age," said Zhang Xiaoning, chief of the Chinese Golf Association. "It's a significant part of our preparation for the Olympic Games."

Per Ericsson, president of Volvo Event Management, Golf said: "The Volvo China Junior Championship is for the future what the Volvo China Open is to the present - extremely important indeed.

"The link between the Junior Championship and the Volvo China Open is important - this year's senior boys winner will get to play in the upcoming Volvo China Open in 2012, and the senior girls winner will be invited to watch and learn from the top players."
