Yi Jianlian joins national team to play Stankovic Cup

BEIJING - Washington Wizards' Yi Jianlian will join his national team to participate in the 2011 Stankovic Continental Cup held in China's Haining and Guangzhou respectively from August 1 to 9.

Yi has been in his home town of Dongguan, Guangdong province, for days and will return to the Chinese squad after they finished the second leg of a four-nation tournament to be held in Yongcheng, Henan province, on Sunday.

"He is going to Ningbo for a training camp and then play Stankovic with his teammates," Hu Jiashi, vice president of the Chinese Basketball Association, told a news conference on Wednesday. "It will be the last and the most important warm-up for China to prepare for the upcoming Asian men's basketball championship," Hu added.

The Asian championship will be held in September 15-25 in Wuhan, Hubei province. The winner of the tournament qualifies for the London Olympic Games next year.

Defending champions Australia, Russia and Angola, as well as China will take part in the Haining leg form August 1 to 4, while New Zealand will replace Australia to join Russia, Angola and the host play in Guangzhou from August 6-9, both legs adop a round-robin format firstly, then 3rd and 4th placement match and top two teams will play for the final.

The annual Cup begins from the year of 2005, Australia won two titles and China and Angola took once apiece.
