Japan whitewashed Myanmar 8-0 at AFC women's Asian Cup

CHENGDU, Sichuan Province - East Asian champions Japan brushed aside Myanmar 8-0 in their Group A opener at the AFC Women's Asian Cup here on Thursday.

Kumagai Saki got the ball rolling for the four-time runners-up just four minutes into the match at Chengdu Sports Center before captain Homare Sawa headed in Miyama Aya's cross from left wing in the 11th minute.

Sawa was bundled over in the box, which gifted Japan a penalty. Yamaguchi Mami fired the penalty high into the net in the 27th minute.

Sameshima Aya added the fourth in the 49th minute with a superb shot from the left side of the area.

Five minutes later midfielder Miyama Aya got her name on the score-sheet with a low shot from the edge of the area just before Yamaguchi fired into an empty net for the sixth.

Sawa scored her second in the 72nd minute, and substitute Megumi Kamionobe wrapped up the win for Japan with four minutes remaining.
