Ajax won 2-0 at home in the first leg with De Jong also scoring both goals. The match was played over two legs with fans for the traveling team banned from attending due to crowd trouble fears.

Ajax went in front after just four minutes with Suarez dispossessing Feyenoord midfielder Denny Landzaat before beating goalkeeper Peter Mulder from 30 yards (meters).

Demy de Zeeuw's through ball set up De Jong, who again beat Mulder with a low shot in the 60th. Jon Dahl Tomasson scored from a rebound to give Feyenoord hope but De Jong added another goal in the 74th before Suarez completed the rout.
