"I more than respect him and I enjoyed working with him. He did what he did but give me a little time and we will see what happens. I want the best for Chelsea," Grant said.

"I am very proud of the players and how they have behaved over the last three days. It's not easy for them or for me. It's not an ideal time but we need to adapt quickly. We have got a good base to continue."

Chelsea said they believed the lack of a UEFA Pro licence would not prevent former Israeli national coach Grant from continuing as coach.

A spokesman said: "We will be making the necessary application for him to get the Pro licence.

"There are certain precedents in place for experienced coaches like Avram..."

The League Managers Association said they would be looking into Grant's qualifications.

"The Association's stance on Mandatory Qualifications is well known and well documented. We have always supported the principles of education and preparation for a career in football management," it said in a statement.
