By creating a new way of "harmonious demolition and relocation" in its urban construction, Hefei, the provincial capital of East China’s Anhui province, is leading its citizens to a better life, according to the Information Office in Hefei Municipal People’s Government.

An official with Hefei Municipal Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs said the innovative method of implementing demolition and relocation has been carried out in three steps. They include: citizens being informed of relevant policies and laws before the demolition; the demolition being carried out with no detriment of citizens’ rights and interests; and the areas being reconstructed for citizens’ long-term welfare.

After local administrative readjustment in 2011, Hefei, with some 7 million registered residents, now has one subordinate city, four districts, four counties and four development zones under its jurisdiction.

Taking people's quality of life into consideration, Hefei has tremendously improved its infrastructure in recent years. A total of 87 primary and middle schools, five hospitals and 114 rural clinics have been built or reconstructed for improving people’s livelihood. By taking a series of training activities and receiving special skills, Hefei's citizens have also been well equipped with latest modern ideas and ability for earning money.

In recent years, the environment of the city has become more attractive through undertaking projects in constructing expressways, investing 6 billion yuan ($95million) in purifying local water system and planting trees.

Officials from Hefei Municipal Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs also revealed that a more mature system of social management and mediation has been established to meet citizens’ demand by establishing comprehensive management centers or offices scattered in 140 rural streets.
