Two IT giants begin production at Chengdu base

Global IT giant, Compal Group put its Chengdu base into production on Dec 19. On the same day, Lenovo (West) Industrial Base also went into operation and will have an annual output of 10 million computers in five years.
With many large IT projects in Chengdu, the city expects to expand its productive capacity to 100 million computers, contributing to 20 percent to the global output.
Lenovo (West) Industrial Base boasts an integral system of production, research and development (R&D), and sales operation. It plans to manufacture desktops and laptops during its initial stage and in the future, move onto other Lenovo products.
Chengdu mayor Ge Honglin said that the completion and operation of the Lenovo base in Chengdu has set a platform for the city to emerge as the world's primary manufacturing base for computers.
"The completion of Lenovo (West) Industrial Base will further improve the global supply chain, R&D system and sales system, which is a crucial step in our global strategy," said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and CEO of the Lenovo Group.
According to the investment program, the products of Compal base in Chengdu cover laptops, ALL-In-One PCs, Tablet PCs and TV sets. The laptop output is expected to exceed 20 million by 2013. Though the day witnessed the opening of the group's first factory at the base, another factory is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2012.
