An incredibly rare all-black King penguin was found on the beach on February 25, 2010 in Fortuna Bay, South Georgia in British Overseas Territory. The picture was taken by travel writer and contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler magazine Andrew Evans, who has just completed Bus2Antarctica, a project that involved Andrew taking public transportation (buses) from National Geographic Headquarters in Washington, DC all the way to Ushuaia, Argentina, after which he joined up with National Geographic Expeditions and sailed with them to Antarctica. Expert Dr. Baker explains that what makes this all-black King Penguin so rare is that the bird's melanin deposits have occurred where they are typically not present -- enough so that no light feathers even checker the bird's normally white chest.[CFP]
