Garlic prices have skyrocketed but farmers have not shared the gains. It's time to correct the situation and give the farmers their due, says an article in Beijing News. Excerpts:

Soaring garlic prices, which have turned several speculators into millionaires, have raised widespread concern. Though many people have made a killing from the rising garlic prices, the farmers have not got a single extra penny.

On one hand, individual farmers are too scattered to organize themselves and demand higher prices, underlining the poor development of farmers' cooperatives. On the other, government supervision needs to be strengthened over such irrational market fluctuations. The government should stop speculators from colluding with other vested interests and sending the market into a tizzy.
