The hukou system should be reformed urgently because it is stopping tens of thousands of migrant workers in Guangzhou - and tens of thousands of others in other cities - from registering their marriage, says an article on Kuaibao.Xinhuanet.Com. Excerpts:
Tens of thousands of people in Guangzhou are caught in dilemma. They cannot get their marriage registered because doing so could cost them their collective hukou (house registration) in the city. And once they lose their urban hukou, they could be driven out of cities and lose their livelihood.
The triangle of marriage registration, hukou and family planning has created lots of troubles for the migrant workforce. For instance, they are denied the rights to get social security and welfare at workplaces by their employers.
The right to get married is a natural right. It is ridiculous then to peg it to the hukou system. This system only helps to intensify social contradictions.
