China's "growing military muscle" has "raised the urgency for the US and Japan to resolve its standoff over where to station US troops in Japan," Japan's foreign minister said in The Wall Street Journal on May 14.

Katsuya Okada expressed his concern over China's "nuclear arsenal and naval capabilities" and said that because of China's growing military power, it was important to maintain a Japan-US alliance. He was quoted as saying that the US "plays a role in maintaining peace and stability in East Asia."

The article said Mr. Okada's comments highlighted his government's "delicate position" in dealing with relationships with its "longtime ally," the US, and its "growing regional neighbor" China.
