Society must help the poor

It is not surprising to see people living at the bottom of society get desperate because their living condition is far from satisfactory. Society needs to take more just steps to help these people, says an article in Zhujiang Evening News. Excerpts:

Two brothers in Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, slashed themselves with a blade recently. They were frustrated with their poverty and had lost all hopes to live after living on scraps and calling only a one-square-meter corner in the city as their home.

People living at the bottom of the economic ladder never ask for more than food, shelter and clothing, the most basic needs of life. But the two brothers could not get even that because of which they chose to commit suicide.

Such tragedies must be prevented. A modern society should protect the basic rights of an individual because that is an essential principle of social justice. Society should never forget its responsibility toward the poor and marginalized poor in order to ensure that they do not become desperate enough to commit suicide.
