The government should change its sports management system to ensure athletes a good life after retirement and prevent officials from abusing power, says an article in Zhujiang Evening News. Excerpts:
Famous gymnast Dong Fangxiao was diagnosed with femoral head necrosis in 2001. Since then she has been struggling to make ends meet because her family has fallen into poverty. Her only source of income is a temporary job. Her situation worsened after the recent expose of the "fake age" scandal.
Athletics is a career with high attrition and injury rate. In China, the living condition of athletes, especially those who have retired, is far from satisfactory. Dong is only one example of that.
It is high time China established a sound social security system for athletes and paid special attetion to the retired ones.
