It's shameful that some local governments violate people's will and even abuse their administrative power on the pretext of doing it to suit "people's requirements", says an article in Guangzhou Daily. Excerpts:
Funing, a poor county in Jiangsu province, has built a mini "China Pavilion" for 3.5 million yuan. And the Funing government shamelessly argues that it was built to meet local people's "requirements".
Nowadays, some local officials love to use "people's requirements" as an excuse to build huge government buildings or other projects at exorbitant costs. On the other hand, officials in cities like Zhuanghe in Liaoning province turn a deaf ear even when nearly 1,000 farmers kneel down and beg them to listen to their problems.
How can local officials live up to people's expectations and perform their duties if they abuse their power for personal gains and glory?
