Comment on "China's influence grows in global auto market " (China Daily, April 26)
China's automotive industry has been great for the country's economic development and brought convenience to millions. However, is this sustainable? With annual sales of over 11 million vehicles in 2009, and projected 20 million vehicles sales in 2010, can this pace be sustained? Already the negative impact of cars in the city is obvious, congested roads, car accidents, fuel shortage, air pollution, parking difficulties, etc. Perhaps time to review the policy of having automotive sector as one of the key industry for China? With its tradition of being a bicycle society, China should invest in this sector and make its roads friendly to bikers. Moreover, it should invest more in inner-city public transportation system so as to reduce the need for cars. Examples for China to follow are the cities like New York, Tokyo, and Paris where the efficient and convenient subway systems make car ownership unnecessary.
