Some recent developments such as the controversy over Google's threat to withdraw its Chinese services and the US arms sale to Taiwan have cast a shadow over the Sino-US relations. The US government should shed its Cold War mentality to maintain friendly relations with China, says an article on Xinhua Net. Excerpts:

The US has already dealt a couple blows to Sino-US relations this year. After the Google incident and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's speech on Internet freedom, came the US announcement to sell arms to Taiwan. Despite Beijing's repeated protests, the Barack Obama administration went ahead with its arms-sale proposal to US Congress.

Beijing-Washington relations are not only connected with the lives of the peoples on the two sides, but also directly relate to world peace. Hence, the relationship has to be handled with concern and care. But what the US government has done reminds one of the Cold War days.

The Cold War became history almost two decades ago thanks to the tremendous global political transformations in the early 1990s. But despite proclaiming victory over the erstwhile Soviet Union, the US is still suffering from Cold War mentality.

Obama has declared that the US does not want to contain China but his deeds do not reflect his words. In fact, they reveal that US leaders have misunderstood the essence of Sino-American ties.

The Sino-US relationship is not a zero-sum game. A rising China can only contribute further to world development, and can never be a threat to any other country. Experience tells us that friendship between two powers helps the rest of the world. Cooperation between China and the US has proved vital on many fronts, from anti-terrorism measures to the fighting piracy.

The year 2010 is important for Sino-US relations because it will set the trend for the next decade. The wisdom and determination of the leaders on the two sides are on test. Let's hope for a better future, for we have trust in the American people and their elected leaders.
