It's the winning that counts for the companies and individuals who were recognized at the inaugural British Business Awards held on Nov 6 in the new Westin Chaoyang Hotel.

Led by the British Chamber of Commerce in China, the British Business Awards highlighted the strong links between China and the UK by rewarding innovation, enterprise and endeavor in business, education and corporate social responsibility.

Nearly 400 guests gathered at the Westin to celebrate the "Best of British", including guest of honor The Duke of York, and Cheng Siwei, former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Sun Yongfu, director-general of the Department of European Affairs, Ministry of Commerce.

Sir William Ehrman, Ambassador to China and patron of the awards said: "Britain has been doing very well in both trade and investment in China".

"Last year, there was more Chinese investment in the UK than in any other EU country," Ehrman noted. "And in the first eight months of this year, Britain's exports of goods to China grew by over 35 percent. The British Business Awards have proven to be a strong platform to gather the business community and to recognize the significant contributions that everyone has made in bringing our two countries closer."

Entries were welcome from any individual or company with a significant British connection and judged by a formidable panel of over 40 judges drawn from industry, education, and government.

"Our vision was to create an event which showcases the best of British spirit, builds a sense of community and demonstrates our collective commitment to China. The Awards celebrated British and Chinese who are outstanding role models for us all," said Jim James, chairman of the British Business Awards.
