The civil aviation transportation industry, one of the pillars of the national economy, plays an active role in promoting and driving the development of the local economy. In Yunnan province, there is one regional airline hub and 11 regional airports, three of which are national port airports. Kunming New Airport, Red River Airport, Lugu Lake Airport are under construction, whereas the preliminary works of Cangyuan, Lancang and Nujiang airports are being carried out.

Kunming New Airport is to be a passenger hub and logistics center serving Southeast Asia and South Asia. The aim is to build a fully functional airport network system by 2015 to meet local economic demands. The construction also provides strong support to Yunnan’s Gateway Building strategy.
