The Second Xinjiang Youth Calligraphy "Lyuguxuefu Cup" Competition came to an end at the Urumqi No 126 Middle School in the Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district), Xinjiang Urumqi autonomous region on July 9.

The competition is jointly hosted by the culture, sports and tourism Bureau of Toutunhe district, the education bureau of Toutunhe district, the Xinjiang Calligraphy Institute and the Xinjiang Hard-Tipped Calligrapher Association.

Divided into writing brush calligraphy and hard-tipped calligraphy, the competition has received a total of 17,509 works since April 25. Over 300 works won prizes after being reviewed by experts from the Xinjiang Calligraphy Institute.

A regular Yinfujing script work by an 11-year-old child named Han Fangyu won first place in the children's writing brush calligraphy competition. Yinfujing is said to have been written by Huangdi (2717-2599 BC), father of the Huaxia ethnicity in ancient China.

"I have practiced calligraphy since I was five years old and I like it very much. I will continue practicing so I can write better," said the pint-sized winner.

Li Hongyi, dean of the Xinjiang Calligraphy Institute and a competition judge, said that children are at the ideal stage in their lives for absorbing traditional culture. The competition has aroused children's interest in calligraphy and promoted good writing habits among children.

It is important to encourage children to learn calligraphy and cultivate an awareness of China's long history and culture through the competition, said Hu Shuman, deputy director of the culture, sports and tourism bureau of Toutunhe district.
