Urumqi's Toutunhe district has launched a new project at the start of the year to improve its community services.

Through a 100 million yuan ($14.58 million) investment, the project will upgrade and rebuild over 20 community centers in the district.

First established in 2016, the Lyling Community Center was originally only 100 square meters. After upgrades in February, the 1,070-square-meter Lyling Community Center was reopened to the public with additional supporting facilities, including a cultural center and library.

“After the upgrades, 80 percent of the community center’s area will be available for local residents to carry out activities,” said Wang Yingguo, deputy director of the Toutunhe district civil affairs bureau.

“Every day I play chess with my old friend here. The new community center has a good environment and facilities,” said local resident Wang Yunfu.

Statistics from Toutunhe authorities show that there are currently 83 community centers in Toutunhe with 39 centers occupying an area of over 1000 square meters. The other 44 community centers will receive construction upgrades in two years.
