In the past seven months of the year, Tai'an in East China's Shandong province has exported 4,240 tons of organic vegetables worth 53.08 million yuan ($7.53 million), according to local customs authority.

Tai'an is one of the earliest regions in China to produce and export organic vegetables, which are featured products of the city's exported food and agricultural products.

According to local government, the city is home to more than 2,000 mu (133.33 hectares) of organic vegetable planting areas, with over 20 organic agricultural product bases and farms as well as nine export enterprises engaged in the business.

The city's organic vegetable products are exported to many countries and regions including Japan, the United States, Canada and the European Union.

"We have helped local enterprises to carry out HACCP system certification and international organic product certification to obtain the permit to enter the high-end foreign market," said Sui Yunpeng, an official from the Tai'an customs.

At present, Tai'an has been certified as an organic vegetable base by 11 organic certification bodies, including the Organic Food Development Center of China (OFDC), the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA) and the Biofertiliser Certification Scheme (BSC).

In recent years, Tai'an customs has formulated and implemented supporting management systems, such as routine quality inspection and traceable quality management to improve quality control.

It has been promoting the operation procedures of organic production techniques in a bid to boost local development of first-rate organic vegetable production bases.

It has also carried out policy publicity activities and offered technical services and law enforcement services for local organic vegetable exporters to help them to enter foreign markets.
