Tanzania's Tanga-Horohoro Highway Opens to Traffic

Updated: 2013-06-27

Tanzania's President, Jakaya Kikwete, attended an opening ceremony for Tanga-Horohoro Highway, on April 13. The President thanked Sinohydro for its performance on the project and referred to the highway as "Tanzanian Tour Avenue".

This road in Tanga province, Tanzania, is the first part of a Tanzanian Engineering Department improvement project, aided by the American Millennium Challenge Corporation and being undertaken by Sinohydro Engineering Bureau (B13). It runs from just northeast of Tanga to the Kenyan border, along the Indian Ocean. It consists of the improvement of 65 km of old road, bridges, culverts, and drainage systems. The project began in January 2010 and was completed on Oct 1, 2012, with a warranty until October 1, 2013.

This is the first American Millennium Challenge Fund road project to be completed. Lin Zhiyong, Chinese Economic and Business Representative to Tanzania, came to the site to view the work and congratulated the workers on their success and work quality.
