Hubei covers an area of 180,000 square kilometers (about 69,500 square miles) with a large population of 60,280,000. Its capital, Wuhan, is located in the southeastern part of the province.

Geographical location

Hubei is a central province of the People's Republic of China. It is situated in the middle reaches of theYangtze Riverand to the north of Dongting Lake.

Population

Hubei has been said to be one of the originating places of the Chinese people. Today, many minority ethnic groups live in this area including: Miao, Tujia, Dong and some others.

Hubei possesses 5 national famous cultural and historical cities, boasts 20 relic sites under national protection, 365 relic sites under provincial protection.

Industry

When it turned to the 1980s, Huibei has developed a comprehensive system of industry in which steel, machine, electric engineering, cotton, and food production are the major part. It is one of important industry bases in China.

Water resources

Hubei is praised as the province of thousands of lakes because it is one of freshwater lakes densely lying areas in China, and Hong Lake is the biggest lake in the province.

Hubei history

Hubei belonged to the powerful state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn Period.Since the People's Republic of China was founded, Hubei has developed greatly. It was the center of the middle south China before the 1960s.
