Nanyang adopts stricter rules for imported grain safety

(chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2015-07-17

Nanyang city's border inspection and quarantine authority has improved its efficiency and achieved positive results in ensuring safety of food imports over the past six months.

From January to June 2015, some 53 kinds of harmful organisms have been detected in a total of 447,600 tons of imported grain during 381 different inspections by the Nanyang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.

As Nanyang's grain import has recorded a steady increase over the past few years, with the city importing one million tons of grain in 2014, including soybean, corn, wheat, dry cassava and other varieties, from such countries as the US, Brazil, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, the Bureau has adopted stricter inspection and approval procedures. Among the new measures introduced are improved market access examination, a rigid quarantine system and better process supervision to ensure grain safety and effectively reduce the risk posed by possible harmful organisms in the imported grain.

Nanyang has become an important industry base for processing imported grain in Henan province. There are altogether six registered grain processing companies in Nanyang, with an annual output of nearly one million ton of grain valued at two billion yuan($322 million).
