Glasses clang after toasts, families chattered happily, and visitors cheered on performances at the hotpot feast of "Niubie", held in Zhongcheng town, Rongjiang county of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong autonomous prefecture, Southwest China's Guizhou province, on Dec 16.

The expression "food brings people together" proved very true as nearly 1,000 visitors sat side-by-side at tables stretching over 200 meters to enjoy the unusual "Niubie" hotpot.

"Niubie" is a very popular herb dish of the Miao and Dong ethnic groups. Unlike a typical herb-infused dish, the greens in this meal take an extra trip in between being plucked from the ground and served on a plate. Miao and Dong people feed herbs to bulls, kill the bulls, take out the indigested herbs, and then boil, filter and fry the herbs with fresh spiced beef. Although certainly not a favorite for vegetarians, the dish is considered a nutritious and tasty staple of the Miao and Dong culture.
