Religious policies and administration in Gansu province

A total of five religions, Islam, Buddhism, Catholicism, Christianity and Taoism, coexist in Gansu province. Islam and Tibetan Buddhism have the most followers.

The people who believe in Islam are mainly the Hui, Dongxiang, Salar, Bonan and Kazak ethnic groups. The followers of Tibetan Buddhism are mainly the Tibetan, Mongolian, Tu and Yugur ethnic groups.

There are few believers of Catholicism, Christianity and Taoism among these ethnic groups. In 1985, there were 3,100 religious sites across the province, with a religious population of more than 1.6 million.
