Pingtan's administrative committee director Xu Weize urged authorities in Dongxiang village to play to its strengths to develop characteristic coastal tourism during a visit there on May 27.

The coastal village has strong cultural links with Mazu, the Chinese goddess of seafarers, and has a strong fishing heritage, both of which are considered to be significant elements to its rural tourism.

Xu Weize suggested that to improve its rural tourism, the village should construct characteristic homestays and revamp its tourism services.

He also advised the village to strengthen its infrastructure to protect its ecology and create a better living environment for locals and visitors.
