The Taiwan Town in Aoqian district of Pingtan, Fujian province has got nearly 4.4 million yuan ($674,000) in sales and saw a historic number of 32,000 visitors during the first six days of the first lunar month of the New Year, ptnet.cn reported on Feb 18.

With about 300,000 yuan on the first day, the sales volume of the remaining five days amounted to 4.1 million yuan, a surge of 272.93 percent compared with the same period of the previous year.

The sales during Spring Festival were five times the number expected on a daily basis, said Xu Linyi, a shop owner at the Taiwan Town.

Products such as Taiwan handicrafts, tea, Kinmen Kaoliang liquor and delicacies were most popular among consumers.

The boom of its businesses was the outcome of local authorities' continuous promotion and the place's increasing national influence, said an official of the town.

In addition to local residents, many people from other provinces and cities such as Jiangsu, Anhui and Shanghai also drove to the town to do Spring Festival shopping.

The Taiwan Town, also known as the Pingtan-Taiwan Duty-free Commodity Market, was opened in June 2014. It mainly displays and sells Taiwan specialties of food, cooking oil, meat, clothing, handicrafts and medicine. The town also brings in Taiwan's flagship stores, creative cultural products, international designer brands and tourism programs. It was rated as a 3A national scenic spot last December.
