Vehicles that fail national emissions standards will be gradually eliminated in Pingtan, an island city in Fujian province, authorities say.

In a recent action plan, the environment and land resource bureau ordered that all “yellow label cars” - the name given to heavily-polluting vehicles – registered before 2005 in Pingtan will be forced out by the end of this year.

Those registered after 2005 will get a longer grace period, but will see themselves out by 2017.

The bureau also states that it will offer 30,000 yuan ($4,713) compensation to all drivers who volunteer to discard heavily-polluting trucks before the deadline, if the trucks were registered after 2006.

Motorcycles, three-wheeled automobiles and low-speed trucks are not subject to the regulation.
