Huang Qibin is a second grader in Harbin city in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang province, which is more than 3,000 kilometers away from Pingtan. His father, who is an avid kite surfer, decided to bring him to Pingtan where a kitesurfing class is being held during summer vacation.

Huang is probably the youngest child in the country to pick up the sport, according to his coach Li Peng. He could only do offshore practice for no more than two hours because of his age and strength.

After mastering the basic skills of kite veering, he will be allowed to start training in shallow waters.

Although young, Huang has already shown plenty of talent in kitesurfing. He will have more edge than his peers due to the early start, said Li.

Pingtan, as an island county in eastern Fujian, is an ideal kitesurfing place. It has hosted many domestic and international kitesurfing events.
