Typhoon Trami hits Pingtan, Fujian province

Trami, the 12th typhoon to hit China this year, landed in east China's Fujian province at 2:40 am on August 22.

Trami swept the town of Suao in Pingtan county at around 1 am and then made landfall in the neighboring city of Fuqing, packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at its center, and with maximum winds of 163.4 km per hour recorded on Niushan Island of Pingtan.

Trami also brought torrential rains to Pingtan and most of Fujian province. Eleven of 13 meteorological stations in Pingtan reported precipitation of more than 100 mm, and the village of Beicuo reported rainfall of 414 mm.

The Fujian provincial meteorological observatory predicted that Trami would move westward and bring rainstorms to central and northern coastal areas of the province.

Local flood control authorities initiated a Grade I emergency response following its landfall on Wednesday night.

Statistics show that Trami is the third typhoon to sweep across Pingtan since 2000.
