Fujian opera to be based on local historical figure

The story of Lin Yang, a historical figure of Fujian's island county of Pingtan, will be adapted into a Min Opera – a Fujian local opera form – thanks to financial support from the county's Bigan Cultural Studies Association, according to the local Min opera troupe.

"Lin Yang's Petition," by the playwright Wu Jintai, revolves around the protagonist's attempts to petition the courts for the good of society, despite much hardship, and the opera is expected to debut in Lin Yang's hometown by the end of the year.

Wu said that, unlike other creative works, this play should be based on historical facts, adding that it will involve scenes concerning forced house relocations and tax issues.

He also said that "Pingtan's opening up should be built on deeper attachment to its cultural heritage" and that he hopes this play will inspire other playwrights to create more works based on Fujian local stories.

Many of Lin's descendents from Fujian, Guangdong and Zhejiang provinces are expected to attend the premiere.
