A large joint campaign to clamp down on smuggling activities in Pingtan, a county island in Fujian province, has kicked off, according to a working meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

A special inspection team made up of personnel from multiple government departments in Pingtan will combat smuggling in three phases until the end of the year.

The campaign, a response to instructions by national and provincial anti-smuggling meetings in July, will beef up marine patrol and land supervision and will crack down on smuggling of guns, drugs, disqualified tax-related goods, endangered animals and plants, and other illegal items, said Chen Changming, director of the local public security bureau.
