When a new 220-kV transformer substation in the village of Zhuyu kicked in on Wednesday, it marked a new era for Pingtan county, which is saying good-by to 110 kV transformer stations for its power, Pingtan Times has reported.

The new substation provides power for the whole of Pingtan Island, which has special significance for the Jinjing Bay district, a new economic and trading hub with a number of enterprises and projects.

The substation has two major transformers with a total capacity of 180 mVA, which almost matches the rest of Pingtan's power supply (181.5 mVA).

The power transmission lines are in two channels on the Haixia Bridge linking Fuqing with Pingtan, the first cross-bridge cable in Pingtan, which used to rely on submarine cables for its power.

The Zhuyu substation is the first 220-kV smart substation in Pingtan, with digitalized information, a networked communication site, and interactive applications, so that security and stability are raised.

The smart system is automated, in contrast to old substations, and allows engineers to operate from a distance and maintain the equipment, a Fuzhou Power Supply Bureau representative explained.
